Srirangam Ranganatha Swamy Temple | Trichy, Tamilnadu
The Ranganathaswamy Temple is located in Srirangam, Trichy, Tamil Nadu. India. This temple is the biggest functioning Hindu temple in India and the 236-feet Rajagopura (tower) is the tallest tower in India. It has seven enclosures formed by thick and huge rampart walls which run around the sanctum. Apart from the 7 enclosures with massive walls, the temple complex has 21 very colorful sculpted gopuras, 50 sub-shrines, 9 sacred pools, and a golden Vimana (dome) over the sanctum sanctorum of the presiding deity.
It also comprises a hall containing 1000 pillars. Intricate sculptures are the most attractive part of the hall. This temple is also known by other names such as Thiruvaranga Tirupati, Periyakoil, Bhoologa Vaikundam, and Bhogamandabam.
History of Ranganatha Swamy Temple: In Ramayana war, the moral and truth-abiding brother of Ravana, Vibishana(who ruled SriLanka who ruled SriLanka) aids Rama in his battle against his brother. Ultimately Rama wins the war, he gifts Vibishana an Idol of Lord Ranganatha, a form of Vishnu. Vibhishana, while on his back to his Kingdom, goes through Trichi, and wanted to take his bath in the river Kaveri and do his daily rituals. Vibishana tries to find someone to hold the idol while he was taking bath and finds the Lord Vianayaka under disguise of a cowherd boy. Vinayaka takes the statues and keeps it firmly in sand, in the banks of kaveri. On seeing this, the angry Vibhishana chases the boy, to punish him, and boy keeps running and climbs over the rock near the Kaveri bank. Vibhishana finally reaches the boy and hits him on the fore-head of little boy who then reveals himself to be Vinayaga. That vinayaka is the Malaikottai uchi pillayar. After that, Vibhishana not able to lift the idol. Lord Perumal apperard infront of Vibhishana and said he wish to live here. The King Dharma varma who ruled that place at that time, he made the mud temple for Lord Ranganathar. After that that mud temple become stone temple built by Kili Cholan or killi vazhavan with the help of Parrot. Parrot tamil name is "Kili" thats why the king was called as " Kili Cholan".
